CHANDIGARH, JULY 24: With a view to develop the southern sectors of the City, the Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Gen. (Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues, PVSM VSM, today inaugurated Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 56 complex at a brief and impressive ceremony. There was a display of the school band, well orchestrated welcome song by school children and interaction with the teachers, children and senior residents of the area, by the Administrator.Elegantly structured and designed, the three-storeyed building complex constructed at a cost of Rs.211 lakhs on an area of 48560 sq. ft., in a record time of one and half years by the Engineering Department of Chandigarh Administration, have class rooms, staff rooms, laboratories, musical rooms, NCC sports wing and other modern supportive infrastructure, equipped with all facilities for the teachers and students. Accompanied by the senior officers of the Administration, the Governor went around the complex and support facilities and made various suggestions to make it more useful. Impressed by the innovative design and lay out, General Rodrigues asked the Management of the School to evolve a system to ensure the proper maintenance of the building and other infrastructure. He also asked the Secretary Education to add a Gymnasium, with Indoor sports facilities and an auditorium in the area for training the students in various cultural,drama and other extra-curricular activities. Stressi ng the need for paying special attention towards extra-curricular activities, besides quality academic education, General Rodrigues asked the Education Department to institute an Annual Cultural and Sports Competition among the different schools of Union Territory and institute a running trophy to the best school. He said that adequate infrastructure must be created in every school to provide opportunities to our young boys and girls to develop their potential and achieve proficiency in different areas of human resource development. He said that the expertise, commitment and interest of the teachers will guide the endeavour of young minds and they must work hard to take the institution on top in the academic and other fields of endeavour. Interacting with the senior residents of the area, General Rodrigues appealed to them to fully involve themselves as active partners in the development of the school. He told them that the Administration has focused on measures to further improve education standards in the rural and urban areas of the Union Territory, Chandigarh and launched various innovative programmes, for upgrading the professional skills and talent of children. It is the parents and teachers who have to work in complete unison, with sincerity and abiding commitment, to help in the implementation of these programmes
